Is there a way to know which profile is current, apart from tracking it manually ?

Nope. :)

Users simply need to track it at the same time that they set it, by storing it as a variable.

Otherwise, you'll need to find a way to read the system registry. Try EventGhost or Python if the variable method is not sufficient.
