New Install and VoxCommando crashes with certain TTS engines
« on: November 26, 2013, 09:23:59 PM »
I am running Windows 8.1 64-bit on an i3 NUC -- freshly set-up and downloaded the latest version of VoxCommando 1.1.6.6 along with the Vera.dll update. On every startup of VoxCommando, it crashes. The event viewer shows:

Is this a clean install or are you updating a previous installation?

If it is a clean install, does it crash immediately when you launch it, before you even select a configuration?  If not, what configuration are you using, and when does it crash?  Have you tried an older version of VC on this system?

Is there any other information you can provide to help us imagine what might be happening?  There are so many unknowns.

At what point are you updating vera, how, and why?

Also,

Do you have .net 3.5 installed?
Where is VC installed?
Are you trying to run it from a network location?
Is uac enabled?
Did you try to run as admin?
What language is your version of Windows, and do you have other language packs installed?
Did you try to use Window's built in speech recognition?

This is a clean install
It crashes a few seconds after it opens -  in the history it gets to focused VoxCommando and thenb I get the pop up that says "VoxCommando has stopped working"

I have not tried an older version of VC on the system - i can try that tonight

You had given a DLL out for a vera question I had, so I had installed it

Yes, .net 3.5 is installed
VC is installed at c:\voxcommando
UAC is enabled
Yes, I run the program as admin and it crashes
Language is English, no other packs installed
No, have not tried Window's built in speech recognition

Basically had installed 8.1, then MCE, then XBMC. Then installed amulet devices software and then VC - that's all that is on the machine

Did you copy an installation from your previous computer?  It is not always 100% clear what fresh or clean install means, when trying to eliminate all possible sources of a problem.
What VC configuration are you using?  Have you changed any options, enabled plugins, or edited the tree at all?  Can you try a different configuration like the one called "basic" or "blank" (I forget if that is the exact name, could be something similar).

Please test windows speech recognition.

Please try to disable UAC.  Make sure you are rightclicking voxcommando.exe and choosing "run as administrator" and not just running from an administrative account.

Unfortunately that error message is not very useful and could mean almost anything.  Are you able to find any more information about the error in windows event viewer?

I'm not sure what else to suggest, but VC has been tested on windows 8 and works fine normally.

I had actually installed VC through an RDP session. I decided to start over and do it from the console and all seems well now
Is it not recommended to use RDP with setting up VC?

EDIT - appears I spoke too soon, crashed again, this time I had logging on and it's attached

VC crashed again. I set up XBMC to use mySQL and everything imported correctly.
I then started up a song from within XBMC and asked "Who is this artist?" and VC promptly crashed
The log is attached

I'm using the amulet devices remote along with the kate voice from NeoSpeech - the voices are registered appropriately and work when I test them from within the VC options menu

In both of your recent logs it seems like it is crashing when doing TTS.  Is this a repeatable thing?  If you can always get it to crash when doing TTS this gives us at least something to go on...  Otherwise it all seems very mysterious to me.

Yup, it's repeatable. I asked "who is this artist" while I'm listening in XBMC -- the volume goes down and then I get:

VoxCommando
VoxCommando has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working ......

3 out of 3 so far

3 out of 4 -- 4th time it displayed text on my screen as to how the artist is -- no text to speech happened

Yeah, OK you saw some OSD but it is still a command that uses TTS, isn't it?

Can you try using a different voice (preferably the default Microsoft voice)?

Can you try using a different command that uses TTS?  Preferably not one that also queries XBMC?

Can you also try to avoid using TTS as much as possible to see if it generally works OK without?

Yes, I saw some OSD but expected TTS, which I didn't get
I changed to one of the Microsoft voices (the US woman) and VC didn't crash but there was no TTS, just text on the screen as to who the artist was

What is a simple non-XBMC action that will do TTS? Sorry, I'm a noob with this

Most of the commands I've been giving XBMC work fine - only crashes have been with TTS

My XBMC music library is pretty large:

1,485 albums
26,851 tracks
2,653 artists

Yes your library is somewhat large.  It is possible that this has something to do with it, but I doubt it.  For now I would like to concentrate on the TTS.  Please do more testing with the other voice and elaborate more on that if possible.  You ask what artist is this, and it does not speak, but VC continues to function normally.  That sounds very strange.  I think maybe you are leaving something out of your description, or I am just not understanding what you are saying.

Here is a command to test TTS.  Copy and paste it into your tree.

Code: [Select]
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-16"?>
<commandGroup open="True" name="T T S test" enabled="True" prefix="" priority="0" requiredProcess="" description="">
  <command id="173" name="T T S test" enabled="true" alwaysOn="False" confirm="False" requiredConfidence="0" loop="False" loopDelay="0" loopMax="0" description="">
    <action>
      <cmdType>TTS.Speak</cmdType>
      <cmdString>Do you like my pants?  Do you think they are fancy?</cmdString>
      <cmdRepeat>1</cmdRepeat>
    </action>
    <phrase>T T S test</phrase>
  </command>
</commandGroup>
