Well, Gotham is still in Alpha, but AFAIK the Frodo configuration for VC should work perfectly fine with Gotham without modification.  Of course that may change later on depending on what they do to the XBMC JSON API, but I am optimistic that nothing too drastic will be changing for a while.

[UPDATE MAY 2014 for some minor things you may need to adjust now that Gotham is out officially: see http://voxcommando.com/forum/index.php?topic=1559.msg13615#msg13615]

Hi James,

been watching some videos of yours and others, and in your xbmc frodo video you mention installing a VC repository etc. can I presume this is still need, It's just when watching other videos this repository doesn't get mentioned.
also because my xbmc is installed in portable mode on a remote HTPC it is not installed the the default location, to get my xbmc to shut down and launch am I going to have to edit the path in the command below,

There is only one video about the proper way to install XBMC Frodo, so that's the only video that needs to mention VoxTools.

This info is also on the wiki: http://voxcommando.com/mediawiki/index.php?title=Installation_XBMC_Frodo

As per James's response the other day, you can control (interact with) XBMC over your network using VC, but VC can't launch any program on a different machine on the network. This means that XBMC will need to be running (wherever it is installed) for VC to control it.

If XBMC is installed on a machine that is simply sleeping rather than shut down, it might be possible for you to use Wake On Lan to wake up that machine so that VC can then control it. But basically, unless VC can "see" XBMC, it can't communicate with it.
TIPS: POST VC VERSION #. Explain what you want VC to do. Say what you've tried & what happened, or post a video demo. Attach VC log. Link to instructions followed.  Post your command (xml)

Thanks,

That was the video I check out in the first place, but in my quest for knowledge was checking out the other videos and they didn't seem to mention the same steps, just wanted to make sure I was doing the right thing, Being as that video is a year old

My install of VC is on a media server running win 7, but my xbmc is on a HTPC machine again running win 7.

After re-reading James post I can see he said not on a remote machine  :-[  Perhaps there is another method

Hi Guys

Well following the video and trying to install the Vox tools in xbmc I am getting the dependencies not met so it will not install, This is on xbmc gotham latest release,
I know there is no support for Gotham yet, is there a chance this will get fixed any time soon, and what are the implication of not having the tools installed in xbmc i.e. what does the tools do?

Thanks

Gotham has a bug in its dependencies checking. We have updated the repo to get around this now, so hopefully it will install for you if you try again.

If not, you might need to force a repo refresh or remove it completely and reinstall it from zip. We've tested it on Gotham Nightly Feb. 14 and it works.

Re: "What does the tools do" -- this information is in the wiki. Just search the wiki for VoxTools using the search field in the left-hand margin and follow the links.

update: there is now also a "custom Google search" field on the wiki. It searches both the wiki and the forum at once.
