Vera lite vs home center
« on: September 08, 2013, 02:50:14 AM »
Hi all, just thought I'd post here as I am sure some people would have some experience with either or both of these products. I am looking at buying a Vera lite unit and some z wave products. In my reading I also came accross the fibaro boys and their home center product. Reading a bit more about the two makes me feel like the vera product although not a "pretty" as some people have pointed out seems to be very good in the cost and open platform aspect.

Does anyone have any thoughts on these two products. From what I have seen the vera doesnt seem to look "ugly" and the gui doesnt really bother me. Just want something I can expand on and create rules easily and that will be robust hardware wise

Any tips or buying advice is much appreciated!

Thanks

I purchased the Vera Lite about a month ago and it has been working well for me. Admittedly I only have a couple of lights connected to it currently (Ceiling light via wall switch and a lamp via smart energy switch), but they both work perfectly. I have used them through VC and through Vera's smartphone app without difficulty. The GUI isn't very pretty but for my limited (so far) needs it works just fine.

The Fibaro unit looks pretty slick, but apart from the obvious (it is much more expensive) you should be aware of the following potential issues.

- It is probably going to be difficult (maybe even impossible) to control using VoxCommando.**
- It may be a bit of an electricity hog. (This is an educated guess only.)

Other than that, I can't say much since all I know about it is what I have read online since this morning when I read your post!

[**Edit: Not at all impossible, it turns out. See http://voxcommando.com/forum/index.php?topic=1675.msg17759#msg17759. - nime5ter]

Thanks Jason and James,

As far as I have it as well the vera unit is built on the "normal" open source mentality so I would have to agree with you James that Vox talking to vera and vice versa would be ok (for people like you who understand those complicated things  :bonk )

As far as setup I might be doing a very similar setup to you JasonFox. Just trying to get a feel for the product in one room of my place first and then build from there should it work for me. I havent heard\read anything major going wrong with the vera units. Again biggest complaints were the GUI not being as flash but that doesnt phase me. I am leaning more vera way purely based on the OPEN COMMUNITY principles they work on. Like vox the vera units have plugins that add features and these are all done by members of the vera community. You wouldnt perhaps have any feedback or experience playing with this or perhaps James ( I think you have a vera unit if I remember from another video of yours)

Thanks guys
