Tutorials / Nest Thermostat and Nest Protect - Command Collection
« on: January 17, 2015, 12:28:25 PM »
Here is a tutorial and demonstration showing how to voice control (or automate) your Nest devices using VoxCommando version 2.1.3.6 or later: Downloads

The command collection is attached to this post.  Save the xml file and then drag it into your VoxCommando command editor window.

15-Aug-2015 update: Changes to Nest site required updates to 2 commands for generating payload XML files for Protects and thermostats.

2-Mar-2016 update: Fixed some typos, added command to get target temp, fixed Protect battery health command, and made sure Nest data is refreshed in commands retrieving current data.

Since Kodi 14 "Helix" was just officially released (December 23rd 2014), I decided to install it on a test machine to make sure everything is OK with VoxCommando.

As far as I can tell everything is working exactly as expected.

I started with a fresh install of VoxCommando version 2.1.2.8 and the default configuration for XBMC Gotham.  I followed the normal install instructions as per our Wiki: http://voxcommando.com/mediawiki/index.php?title=Installation_XBMC_Frodo

Here are a few things that I ran into that you should watch out for.

1 - If it is a new install of Kodi, then both VoxCommando AND Kodi need to have firewall exceptions created, in order for VC to connect and receive events from Kodi.

2 - ***VERY IMPORTANT*** If you are using the xSql plugin to generate XML for Kodi (which I prefer to use whenever possible) then you should pay special attention to the database paths in the xSql plugin settings.  The database is now using not only a new file name but predictably, is in a folder named Kodi, not in the XBMC folder (see image).  If you had an earlier version of XBMC installed you will still find the old database files in that XBMC folder so this might lead to some confusing results!

We will include a Kodi - Helix configuration with the next release of VoxCommando that has the correct database paths already set, but in the meantime you can fix this yourself.

General / New Forum - New Look(s)
« on: December 02, 2014, 05:52:11 PM »
We've moved the forum to a new server (hopefully it will be more reliable than GoDaddy) and we've taken the opportunity to upgrade to SMF version 2.

With that comes a new default look, but we've also added a few other skins for you to choose from.

  • On the main forum menu click "Profile" and then "Look and Feel".
  • A profile page will open
  • Click "change" next to "Current Theme:"

There are light and dark skins, the late night hacker will want to try "DarkBreak", but the default "Curve" is the only one with a variable "full-screen" width.

I hope you enjoy the new look(s)!  ::happy

« on: November 17, 2014, 01:32:27 PM »
A new version (2.1.2.1) with a revised tree editor and some other improvements is now available on the download page.

http://voxcommando.com/downloads.asp

Changes are outlined here: http://voxcommando.com/mediawiki/index.php?title=ChangeLog#Version_2.1.2.1

The most significant change is the addition of "Group Collections" in the tree editor.

New and changed icons in the tree editor are shown here in comparison to the old icons: http://voxcommando.com/mediawiki/index.php?title=Comparison_chart_of_old_to_new_icons

Want to make your plugin fantasy a reality?

We get many requests for new plugins. We can't realistically make a new plugin for each individual request, but with enough crowd interest anything is possible.

In order to make some (most) plugins, we first need to purchase hardware to develop with, but keep in mind that there is much more to making a plugin than just buying the hardware.  In some cases it will require many full days of work.

If you want to support the development of a new plugin, please use the following form to "vote".  More details are available on the form.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1OhMRjVUD5vCQebjnMpygMOm0mCEt8spHG84cVxgs27U/viewform

Note: on the last page of the form there is a link that allows you to go back and change your votes.  Please be sure to keep a copy of this URL!  We cannot provide you with this URL later so if you lose it we will need to manually delete your old submission and then you can vote again.

Also of note: Anyone is free to make a plugin for VoxCommando.  If you are comfortable programming in C# and you want to develop your own plugin, please contact me.

As always, thanks to everyone for supporting the development of VoxCommando.  Your interest, input, and financial support help to make it all possible!

Other Plugins / TTS - Talking Head
« on: June 12, 2014, 11:36:13 AM »
In VC2 version 1.955 we added an experimental feature.  A "talking head" that can show an animation when using the TTS.Speak action.

This feature is experimental, and we may decide not to keep it as a standard part of VoxCommando if it causes too many problems, but I will try at least to keep it as an option in an alternate version of the TTS plugin that you can use.  Maybe it will be OK and we can keep it.

There are a few limitations.  The first is that the talking head will only be animated when using TTS.Speak.  It does not work with TTS.SpeakSync (or speak2wav) because SpeakSync essentially freezes the program until speaking is finished.  I am trying to find a work around for this problem but so far I am not having too much luck.

There is a new TTS action for showing and hiding the window containing the talking head.  TTS.ShowHead takes one parameter.  True to show the head and False to hide the head.  In an upcoming version I may add an optional parameter to "keep on top" or something similar.  This will not allow you to show the head in front of certain "screen stealing" programs such as WMC or XBMC in "true fullscreen" mode, but will hopefully allow us to show the head in front of all other "normal" windows.

If you look in the plugin folder ..yourVcFolder\Plugins\TTS\visemes you will see all the still images used for the animation of the head when speaking.  You can use the following link as a reference for the mouth positions

http://aidreams.co.uk/forum/index.php?page=Visemes_-_for_Character_Animation#VISEME_1_.28silence.29

Image 01 is the face at rest, Image 23 is the face when blinking.  You can use any file names you want but they should be in the correct alphabetical order so be sure to use the same name for all files, and pad the numbers with a '0'

eg:  file01.jpg, file02.jpg, file03.jpg

You can try to create your own images and place them in this "visemes" folder.  We are hoping that if you come up with something good you will share it with the rest of us by posting a link to the files you have created!  You can use 3D software, photography, pull stills from video, illustration, clay scultpure, or just edit images in your favourite drawing program.  Anything goes, just try to keep the main "head" in a still position to avoid jerking motions. :P

Tutorials / Google Calendar Plugin - Generating timed events
« on: May 28, 2014, 05:47:40 PM »
This tutorial focuses on generating timed VoxCommando events for Events that are in your Google Calendar.  It does not cover all of the topics related to the GgCal plugin.

Please also refer to the very detailed wiki page for the plugin settings: http://voxcommando.com/mediawiki/index.php?title=Plugin_GgCal_Guide
