Okay first i made this tutorial for reddit initially to gain a little bit of popularity for 2 great products voxcommando and happy bubbles BLE detectors. This may seem kinda meh to some of you that have used vox for a while but here it is.

Hello this is a review I'm doing about presence detection using bluetooth low energy devices that I received from a company called https://www.happybubbles.tech/ for the past 2 weeks I've been working heavily with these devices to understand the ins and outs and test different home automation using them.

My current home automation devices are zwave, x10, and phillips hue. I currently use software such as home assistant, voxcommando, eventghost, and tasker to run my home automation devices. This device isn't really limited to any 1 software and works through MQTT so pretty much anything that can receive messages through MQTT will work with them.

This is going to be a tutorial of the setup on a windows operating system along with a review of how my system is currently implementing the BLE devices.

First off you need to choose an MQTT service to use. I chose to run mosquitto MQTT server locally on my windows 10 PC. A tutorial on setting up mosquitto MQTT can be found here.

https://sivatechworld.wordpress.com/2015/06/11/step-by-step-installing-and-configuring-mosquitto-with-windows-7/

Next you need to setup the happy-bubbles BLE detectors which is pretty simple.

1.) Plug in the BLE detector

2.) At first start the BLE detector will boot into config mode and broadcast as an access point. At this point you simply connect to the happy-bubbles wifi access point using a phone or laptop.

3.) After you have connected to the happy-bubbles access point just point your browser to http://192.168.4.1/ This will bring you to the config page to begin setup.

4.) On the left side of the page click "wifi setup" wait until your router populates in the list and select your router and plugin your password then click save.

5.) Next go to the "MQTT setup" on the left side panel and here you will enter your local ip address of the computer that is running mosquitto. Next enter the port which be default is "1883". Choose whether you want the lights on the device to blink when a beacon is detected. Click save and then return to the "Home" tab on the left panel.

6.) Choose a name for your device and you are finished with the BLE detectors initial setup. You should see that the Happy-Bubbles detector is now connected to the MQTT server. Hold the "config" button on the BLE detector for 5 seconds and then release it to exit config mode and begin intercepting beacon transmissions.

7.)Next comes the setup in your home automation software i personally use VoxCommando much more than any others so i will be running through quickly how i have my office setup to work with VoxCommando and the BLE detectors.

VoxCommando is a voice automation system that is so much more than just voice automation software. I've been using it for close to 3 years now and it is constantly receiving updates. As a matter of fact its most recent update was adding a plugin to work specifically with the happy-bubbles BLE detectors. The creator of the software "JitterJames" did an excellent job creating this plugin within only 2 days of my requesting it if that tells you anything.

1.) Download the latest version of VoxCommando. There is a free version that allows up to so many commands before a restart is needed. This limitation is removed with the paid version but for those that want to test it out first this will suffice.

http://voxcommando.com/home/

2.) Use the documentation included in VoxCommando's installation to ensure you setup VoxCommando correctly. But for the most part its just download and install like anything else.

3.) After VoxCommando is installed and open click on the plugin tab at the top. http://imgur.com/P689YhJ then click enable/disable plugins. Click the checkbox next to MQTT then click save.

http://imgur.com/Zevzwpq

4.) Click plugins tab again and now you should see MQTT in the list. Click it to enter the MQTT setup page.

http://imgur.com/etBAovd

5.) Enter the ip address of the computer running mosquitto into the host section and make sure the port is set to 1883 as long as you didn't change the default port.

6.) Click the happy bubbles tab and you should be able to see any nearby beacons. Make sure to click and give each beacon a unique name and click save options and your done with this part. My beacons are named for example James Slippers, James Shoes because i implanted a beacon in my slippers and in the tongue of my shoe. I also did the same with the kids and wifes shoes as well. Now we all have smart shoes (Patent Pending) LOL Hopefully apple doesn't steal this.

7.) Now click the "edit" button at the top and the command section will open. Here is where you will start to build the commands you want to make the magic happen.

http://imgur.com/liGUMSS

8.) Create a new group and name it something like "BLE DETECTION" after that i created folders for each room through my house. Office, living room, dining room, front porch, etc.

http://imgur.com/W8D7qYF

9.) Go to the room you will be working with first and click "create new command" name the command however you wish i named mine "Name1 BLE Detected" "Name2 BLE Detected" "Name3 BLE Detected" and so on for each person that will have a beacon on them.

10.)On the main VoxCommando window at the bottom click "history" and this will open up a log of all the events that are taking place. If you bring your beacon into range of the BLE detector you will see an event pop up for it. Drag this event "Beacon detected" event and drop it in the VoxCommando editor on your new command. This will make it so that anytime the Beacon is detected in VoxCommando it will trigger whatever is in the command.

http://imgur.com/lEOVNlJ

11.) This pretty much sums up how to use the beacons with VoxCommando but you will need to setup your commands to do as you wish yourself depending on what home automation needs you want it to run. There are plenty of different plugins available in VoxCommando to choose from and a great community of people always willing to help.

The way my office currently works is when i walk into the office wearing a beacon my tv turns on (USB-UIRT), hue lights turn on to certain colors/brightness depending on what time of day it is (Phillips Hue), stereo receiver turns on (X10 appliance module), desk fan turns on (X10 appliance module), and my computer greets me through text to speech in a random way every time I enter. My next project will be adding another BLE detector to my front porch to control my front door lock (Cause who has time to fumble around looking for keys)

NOTICE: For those of you using home assistant you can use the MQTT plugin to get messages from the BLE detectors to home assistant to perform different commands as well. The creator of the BLE detectors has also informed that the he is currently working on a home assistant component to make this a little bit easier as well.

I've been looking for something that works well for presence detection for quite some time now and everything up until now has been a failure. PIR Motion detectors, IR tripwires, beacons with my phone, etc. have always given false positives, turn lights off while I'm still int he room, and have no way of telling who is in the room but only that someone or something might be there. With these devices presence detection truly is smart and can detect who is in the room and can also use logic to avoid turning devices off when one person leaves and others stay in. To me personally this is revolutionary in the home automation scene and i will be ordering many more of these devices.

I received no kickbacks or payments for making this tutorial/review but I did receive a couple of the BLE detectors to review for you guys. This is one of the first reviews that I've ever done so I hope it was up to standards. I will be making a short video of my setup working with the detectors very soon so stay tuned.

Other Plugins / MQTT?
« on: July 22, 2016, 02:52:54 AM »
Hello everyone I just received some "happy bubbles BLE detectors to check out and would like to get these working with voxcommando. I'm not sure if anyone has seen these before but basically put a small Bluetooth Beacon in one of my shoes and when I walk into a room the signal gets reported damn near instantly to the mqtt server the device reports to. The mqtt server has a topic that can be subscribed to for each room. The owner said he's about to add support for home assistant but I was wondering if anyone new a way to subscribe to the topics on the mqtt server with voxcommando? I'm entirely new to the use of mqtt and it took me a while to get everything setup using cloudmqtt. I will eventually just run one using a program called mosquito locally on my PC instead but for now I've just been using cloudmqtt to test the waters.

The implications I'm looking at for these devices is presence detection that is smart and knows who is in which room at all times. Having this would allow you to set a profile for when a certain person enters a room. Lights to certain levels, music follow you, lighting follow you, tvs turn on and switch to your Plex/xbmc account, etc, etc.

Thanks for any help with this I've been looking into it for the past week now.

Other Plugins / restoring hue lights
« on: February 14, 2016, 11:33:33 PM »
I'm trying to use an x10 motion alert to turn on my hue lights. But i want the previous color used to be restored when motion is detected. Here is what ive worked on so far.

Code: [Select]
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-16"?>
<!--VoxCommando 2.2.1.4-->
<command id="434" name="Motion On" enabled="true" alwaysOn="False" confirm="False" requiredConfidence="0" loop="False" loopDelay="0" loopMax="0" description="">
  <action>
    <cmdType>Hue.Store</cmdType>
    <params />
    <cmdRepeat>1</cmdRepeat>
  </action>
  <action>
    <cmdType>Hue.Raw.Get</cmdType>
    <params>
      <param>lights</param>
    </params>
    <cmdRepeat>1</cmdRepeat>
  </action>
  <action>
    <cmdType>RegExTool.Open</cmdType>
    <params>
      <param>True</param>
    </params>
    <cmdRepeat>0</cmdRepeat>
  </action>
  <action>
    <cmdType>Results.RegEx</cmdType>
    <params>
      <param>("on":\strue)</param>
    </params>
    <cmdRepeat>1</cmdRepeat>
  </action>
  <if ifBlockDisabled="False" ifNot="False">
    <ifType>(A)&lt;(B)</ifType>
    <ifParams>0&amp;&amp;{#M}</ifParams>
    <then />
    <else>
      <action>
        <cmdType>Hue.Restore</cmdType>
        <params />
        <cmdRepeat>1</cmdRepeat>
      </action>
    </else>
  </if>
  <event>X10.RECVPLC.F3.ON</event>
</command>

It seems like it just keeps returning to bright white instead of whatever was stored at the beginning of the command. So basically when motion is detected on that motion sensor i want the color of the lights in my office to be stored then restored. The reason behind doing this is so that if i do change the color manually the motion detection wont change the color when someone else walks into the room.

If someone else knows a better way to handle motion detected lighting in a small office im all ears. I dont want to fumble around looking for my remote to turn on my lights i want them to turn on as soon as i walk into the room. But if i change the color of the bulbs to something different i dont want them to change to a default color when someone else walks in if that makes sense.

EDIT: I am getting an error for when it tries to "store" the current setup.

Error system index out of range exception: index was outside the bounds of the array

Tasker + VC / Anyway to receive autoremote messages from Tasker in vox?
« on: October 19, 2015, 06:35:12 PM »
Is there anyway of getting autoremote messages to appear in voxcommando?

hello i have a remote that i would like to setup a single button to toggle an x10 module on/off with. Im trying to eliminate the need for eventghost. In eventghost i had 2 events
1. Fan On
2. Fan Off

when i would press the button it would toggle one of the options to disabled and run the event that was not disabled, when clicked again it would swap.

Ive been looking all day trying to find a way to handle this. as always thanks for any help.

Other Plugins / Unhandled Exception Error with RoboB plugin
« on: October 04, 2015, 06:49:27 PM »
Hello im having an issue getting RoboB to work properly. I use "RoboB.Select" and either nothing will happen at all or a blank RoboB window will open with the "navigate" option available.

If i return back to the plugin options i throws me straight into the "unhandled exception" error.

I had it working great yesterday opening my security cameras up on my desktop and signing in for me. Now today all i am getting is errors.

Here is the information contained in the unhandled exception error

General Discussion / Cortana voice
« on: March 19, 2015, 02:33:41 PM »
Is there any way to use cortanas voice in VC?

25
I've tried a lot of different microphones from the kinect, modified baby monitors, CAD U7, conference mics, wall switch plate mics, headphones, Bluetooth mics, and I always seemed to have issues with them aside from a headset microphone. But the other day I found a couple of these old receiver surround sound configuration microphones.

So Tiny

Integrated it right into the armrest of my couch, its at a great angle for capturing my voice. I can be anywhere in my room speaking at a normal tone and it picks me up with great accuracy.

Almost every surround sound receiver ive ever purchased came with one of these microphones. Not sure if i just got lucky with the quality this thing works at or if they are all similar in quality but if you have one lying around and need a discrete microphone definately give this little guy a shot!

General Discussion / Room by Room Wifi?
« on: December 30, 2014, 06:04:02 PM »
Im looking for a really good system for occupancy sensing through smart devices. Ive read up on bluetooth but it doesnt seem like it would work well. Im planning to eventually get a smartwatch and would love to have things follow me around with high accuracy.

For example if i walk into my living room i would like to use tasker to send a command to voxcommando that im in the room and vox should turn on the lights to my prefered brightness, Turn on the TV, the receiver turn on to my prefered volume, amplifier turn on, plex switch to my profile, from there i could use a mix of voice control for plex app, voxcommando, evenghost, and tasker to adjust levels on a per need basis. I would want a system that could track which room im in room by room though the watch.

I would eventually need to get more devices for the entire family though. We have 6 members in 1 home. I think this will be a challenge later on with conflicts between multiple devices in 1 room at a time. But it would be cool to have the lighting and volume adjust to an average for which devices are in the room and dependent on what time it is.

TL;DR

Need high accuracy room by room occupancy detection with support for smartwatch to control a wide range of apps.

General Discussion / X10 Motion Sensor Help
« on: September 18, 2014, 11:17:14 PM »
Hello everyone. I just had someone steal some stuff from the front of my home and was hoping I could get your help with a little motion sensing setup I'm trying to get going. I have a PR511 motion flood light setup out front of my home.

The PR511 Motion sensor is set to code A16 and my socket rocket at the lanai is set to code A1 when motion is sensed it flips on the front garage lights and the lanai light all at once. What I would really like is to have TTS come through my computer speakers notifying me when the motion sensor is tripped.

Is there anyway for me to do this? I can't afford a camera setup yet so I was hoping I could at least be notified when there is motion detected out front. Just let me know any additional information you may need that can help me get this working.

General Discussion / Voxcommando keep audio settings
« on: October 22, 2013, 06:10:37 PM »
im having a bit of trouble with an audio configuration here.

1) Partial-Mute in vox settings doesnt seem to have any effect at all. so if i have a movie turned up pretty loud, when vox responds its super loud.

2) The other issue im having is not related to vox so much as it is with windows with the tts audio output settings. I change the setting to use my receiver but when i turn off the receiver or switch sources and then come back it always defaults back to whatever else it can like my headset. then i have to go in and switch it by hand. Does anyone know of a way i could get it to stick to my receiver and not go back to default when the receiver is turned off or switched to another source?

VoxWav Free and VoxWav Pro / voxwave making vox unresponsive
« on: October 21, 2013, 06:28:34 PM »
just purchased voxwave and im having a bit of problems with it. So far everything gets sent and the voice commands are being sent properly but if i say "lights off" vox becomes unresposive for about 20-30 seconds and then the command finally goes through. There are times when it will work instantly but a lot of times it hangs up for a long time and then it finally sends the command through.

this is with any command itsa mix sometimes commands just go right through just fine then sometimes the commands will freeze up for a while

General Discussion / play trailers of local media
« on: August 01, 2013, 12:45:03 AM »
After enabling CE in XBMC I have the option to watch trailers for my media. How could I activate the trailers by voice? Right now i'm just using move commands to go to the button. Is there a way I could just say "play trailer", and whatever movie it is over at the time it will play the trailer for it? I couldn't find an action for this anywhere in the XBMC build of VOX, im guessing it's because it depends on the addon.
