Using a non-default microphone/speakers for recognition/tts
« on: November 19, 2010, 12:44:08 PM »
I just discovered this.  It is great news.  You can use any available "recording device" for recognition in VoxCommando by changing settings in windows advanced speech options

You can also send TTS (text to speech) to any available "playback device".

I have not verified if this works with Vista, but I can do it on Windows7 Ultimate 32bit.

To use non-default input (recording device)
- Go to the windows Speech Control Panel
- click "Advanced Speech Options" (top left)
- now you obviously click "Audio Input" right? WRONG!!!  I made this mistake over and over.
- instead click "Advanced"
- now instead of "Use preferred audio input device" you can select another in the drop down.

To use non-default output for TTS (playback device)
- Go to the windows Speech Control Panel
- click "Text to Speech" (under Advanced speech options)
- again ignore the button that says "audio output" and instead click "Advanced"
- now instead of "Use preferred audio input device" you can select another in the drop down.

this doesn't seem to work with the dragon naturally speaking engine :(.
What are the best alternatives?

I don't understand the question.  Are you talking about using a dragon TTS voice?

Are you trying to use a Dragon TTS voice and get it to play on a specific playback device?

I don't know anything about it, but maybe there is a setting in dragon somewhere.

I was mainly talking about the input, but maybe i have the wrong idea. Is the input thingy voice recognition software (like the dragon engine/microsoft voice recognition) or microphone software?

in this thread I am talking about choosing which microphone VoxCommando will listen on and which output it will use for Text to speech.

VoxCommando only works using the windows built in Engine available in Vista and Windows 7.

It does not require, nor can it use the Dragon Naturally Speaking Engine.

Sorry Painy.  I hope I don't sound grumpy or like I am condescending to you.  I know there is a language barrier.  I understand the difficulty for non-English speaking people.  I try to answer as clearly as I can.  :P

Ah, it wasn't really a language problem, I just interpreted your post wrong.
Don't worry about it! I think you're doing a wonderful job keeping this forum very accessible. Just hope you'll be able to keep that up should VC boom members exponentially cause i bet all this is demanding a lot of your time already. On that note, are looking to get maximal membership as soon as possible, or will you wait until version 1.0 or something?

Yes, it is very time consuming, but mostly I enjoy it.  I am on a sort of mini-vacation right now.  I am away from home for a month, and trying not to work too much.  I am spending a lot of time on VC right now.  If I get a big "real" job then VC will have to wait... :(

I think we are getting pretty close to a version that is ready for the general public, the main problem is going to always be creating documentation.  It is hard because

1 - VC is always changing so it is hard to create help files
2 - Making the help files is less fun than making new features!

I would be happy to find as many new users as possible, now.  I see no reason to wait.  The demo videos speak for themselves.  When people see what is possible, I think most are willing to spend a bit of time to figure out how to set it up.  Having more users won't necessarily take more time from me, since existing members are already starting to answer new user questions for me very well.

I also want to start charging new users a price to buy the software, but I need to create some kind of license agreement. :-\  That is not much fun either.
